These boat anodes are made of zinc or magnesium depending whether they are salt water anodes or fresh water anodes. Your boat anodes will then corrode instead of more important boat parts such as engines or drive shafts! The time each anode will last depends on the environment it is exposed to, however they should be replaced once the anode is fully corroded, therefore you should check your boat zincs or magnesium anodes at least every two months (or have your diver check during your boat bottom cleaning!)
